Your care pathway

Outpatient appointment for assessment and diagnosis

  • You will be seen and assessed by Mr Vinay Takwale. Appropriate investigations will then be recommended.
  • You will be given information about both surgical and non-surgical treatment options.
  • If surgical treatment is advised, the recommended procedure, its success rate and potential complications will be explained. If you wish to proceed with such an operation a convenient date will be booked.
  • The hospital will send further information to you in preparation for surgery. This letter will state the time you need to come to the hospital and how long you should be fasted for.

Attend for surgery

  • A preoperative medical assessment for anaesthetic fitness will be organised if you are going to have general anaesthesia.
  • MRSA screening will be performed.
  • The procedure will be carried out under general or local anaesthesia as appropriate.
  • Where possible the operation will be performed as a day procedure so that you will be able to go home the same day.
  • If you need to stay in hospital you will be seen every day of your stay by Mr Vinay Takwale to assess your recovery.

Discharge

  • A doctor and a physiotherapist will see you prior to discharge.
  • The physiotherapist will show you some exercises to practice before your next appointment.
  • If you need a sling or splint the physiotherapist will also advise regarding its use.
  • A follow-up appointment will be made for you before you are discharged from the hospital.
